"Over the course of the past school year, students
from the third, fourth and fifth grades participated in the
ART Excel program, and participants’ parents reported
significant benefits in stress-reduction, behaviors and attitudes.
Teachers supported this program, allowing students to leave
class early in order to attend the stress-reduction workshops
and observed discernable changes in the classroom.
Most importantly, students who participated expressed an
improved self-image and an increased ability to focus and
relax. The breathing techniques equipped students to release
stress and control levels of anxiety – thus giving them
a healthy sense of power at a time when children may often
feel out of control. Changes were also expressed in terms
of how students relate to one another and approach problems.
The additional yoga practice gave participants yet another
tool to feel more aware and connected. The bond created between
the students and the teacher gave the children a strong adult
role model to whom they could relate and trust."
